To develop the Home Action Plan service the Energy Saving Trust worked closely with families in two villages, Hook Norton in Oxfordshire and Stewkley in Buckinghamshire. Both of these villages have active community environmental groups and around 10 families from each group took part.
"Low Carbon Hook Norton is an action based group whose aim is to reduce energy. The Home Action Plan helped us reach that aim by providing a common way for ten different households to be assessed, to create individual household reports, which led to common overall actions for the community and a vehicle to communicate them."
Tim Lunel, Low Carbon Hook Norton
The Low Carbon Hook Norton group had special concerns due to the houses being solid wall, stone cottages with thatched roofs and off gas networks. The Home Action Plan provided them with actions and help in delivering positive outcomes from traditionally difficult to treat home.
"In Stewkley we have been able to identify the measures which typically make the greatest difference to reducing our energy bills and reducing our contribution to climate change."
Roger Crews, StewkleyGreen
Since receiving their in-depth report each community member has taken at least two actions and so far it is currently estimated that each household could save an average of £600 a year.
The Home Action Plan could benefit your community group by
- Helping the individual members to work towards the groups overall aims of saving energy, saving money and cutting carbon emissions
- Driving larger actions within the community
- Spreading common actions and knowledge
