Mini unveils electric model
Mini has unveiled its all-electric car model, which will be used to provide insight into the needs and opportunities of the sector, at the Los Angeles Auto Show.
Manufacturer BMW Group is to lease 450 of the Mini E electric cars that run on a lithium-ion battery.
Cars will then be collected at the end of a one year lease period to allow the company to measure the car's real world performance.
"What we're doing right now is really just trying to get some experience with it [the technology]," Jim McDowell, head of Mini's US operations told the Associated Press.
The Mini E, a two-seater, can travel about 150 miles on a singe charge and takes four and a half hours to charge.
Applicants for the lease will need to have a lockable garage with the wiring required to install the cars 240-volt charging equipment.
There have been concerns that the rapidly falling cost of oil and petrol could dampen the public's desire for electrical vehicles.
On the other hand, the electrical power industry has considered stepping in to help the ailing motor industry by placing a large order for electric cars for its fleets.
