Call for smart meter loans for all London

24 January 2009

Smart meters, which can assist households in reducing their energy consumption and electricity bills, are being lent to Lewisham residents like books from their library.

The smart meter lending scheme, led by Green Party London assembly member Darren Johnson, sees residents borrow the device for three weeks at a time.

A reader attaches to the main electricity supply which monitors electricity consumption and relays it to a wireless display.

Using the display residents can examine the difference to their energy consumption that little changes make.

Mr Johnson has called on London mayor Boris Johnson to extend the scheme so that it can benefit homes around the whole capital.

He told the Evening Standard: "This simple measure can go a long way to cut costs and carbon emissions.

"In the trial we found that after a week or two, people can clearly see how much electricity they are using, and make the necessary changes to reduce it.

"People have found them incredibly useful, and I think every Londoner should have the chance to use one."

The recently passed Energy Act calls for all homes to have a smart meter installed by 2020.
